How will the billing work for my student housing utility bill?

When away from home at university and college, students are often living with others for the first time and have new responsibilities like paying for bills. In a communal billing environment, there can be challenges in coordinating budgets and managing bills. Individual billing provides certainty and helps ensure that each resident is able to manage their responsibilities.

That's why there is student housing designed for individual leaseholders along with individual utility billing, which we provide. This practice has become more common here in Canada; the local utility providers (LDCs - local distribution companies) do not offer per-student billing.

This individual billing approach gives residents the certainty and control they want over their utility costs, ensures they are only charged for their equal portion, and ultimately helps people save money and energy.

We have revised our billing presentation for customers living in student housing residences where each customer has individually leased a bedroom in the unit with electricity excluded from rent. The revised billing presentation is intended to provide greater clarity on which charges are for the unit and are divided among unit tenants and which charges are Wyse fees applicable to each tenant/customer individually.

You will see the following in your monthly billing package:

• A Suite Utility Invoice with the metered consumption and associated charges for the entire suite (which is provided to you for information purposes regarding your suite’s utility consumption); and

• An individual Resident Utility Statement which will set out; i) the portion of the Suite Utility Invoice fees and charges that you are individually responsible for in accordance with the terms of your lease; and ii) Wyse’s fees for the billing, payment, account tracking and account management services provided to you. (Please refer to your Resident Utility Statement to see your amount due.)

To determine the share of Suite Utility Invoice charges owing by each customer in the suite, Wyse divides the Suite Utility Invoice charges equally among the unit residents and each resident who is a Wyse customer is responsible only for their share of the unit charges plus the applicable Wyse fees, all as reflected on your individual Resident Utility Statement.

Wyse’s fees are set out in more detail in the Utility Service Contract.

Wyse is dedicated to being responsive and adapting to our customers’ needs. Our top priority is satisfaction, and we are continuing to work with our partners and customers to provide billing services that meet their needs and those of student leaseholders. We charge students only for the utilities they consumed in their unit, according to the terms of their lease, with no mark-up costs.

As an OEB-licensed submetering provider, we remain committed to maintaining integrity in everything we do, while providing superior and more convenient billing services at the same commodity rate as local public utilities. We continuously improve our presentation of billing information and make enhancements to our billing and customer service departments to meet the growing needs of the student housing market.
